History

In the 1970's, the Old Shandon Neighborhood Association was founded by area residents. At that time, it was called the Maple Street Neighborhood Association. During the 1970's, 1980's, and early 1990's, the association worked on such projects as neighborhood beautification of the "tree zone," protection of the residential character of the area in zoning matters, and sponsoring block parties. A major, multi-year project in the 1980's was to work with the city in developing an "Old Shandon-Valley Park Neighborhood Conservation Plan."

In 1996, the Association requested the city to designate Old Shandon as a local historic district. After a lengthy process of study and meetings, the Old Shandon Historic Preservation District was approved by the Columbia City Council on October 3, 2001. Soon thereafter, the association changed its name to the Old Shandon Neighborhood Association.

After receiving the local historic district designation, the association began work on designation as a national historic district. In the fall of 2003, a three block area in the oldest part of Old Shandon was designated a national historic district.

The association continues to focus on the historic character of the neighborhood. In 2003 and 2004, unique street signs, designed to complement the nature of a residential area that is both historic and thriving, were installed throughout the neighborhood. On October 2, 2004, the association is sponsoring a celebration of the centennial of the incorporation of the town of Shandon in 1904.
